Startup Error

T

tomklem

I keep getting a red X error message when I start up my
computer. It says:

"Windows cannot find "C:WINDOWS\System32\system32.exe".
Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try
again. To search for a file, click the start button, and
then click search."

I tried searching for the file with no luck. I tried to
go into my startup menu and uncheck the ones I didn't
know but, that hasn't helped. How do I determine which
program is causing this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,

Your antivirus software probably detected and removed the virus
(system32.exe is a virus), but did not remove the startup reference to it.
Start/run regedit, you should find a string that refers to it under this
key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Click on the string in the right pane and delete it.

It's more than likely in the run key in the registry. Open the registry
editor by typing regedit in the run command (start button>run) navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and see if the system32.exe is there, if so delete it. It is not a windows
file but either a virus or ad program.
