When I launch my computer.. and it somebody had been in AOL reading email and
didnt open all emails... there is a warning message at the start up screen
that says.. you have 34 unread email messages..

Is there any way to disable this or remove it?

Hi

You can download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and when
installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go to
Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.

Otherwise the Unread Mail can be disabled via the Registry - navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Youremailaddress],
double click on 'MessageCount' - in the right hand pane - and change the
value to 0(Zero).

***If you do opt for the Registry please 'tweak', please backup the Registry
first. A good program to do this - as well as being able to restore the
Registry - is ERunt:

I want to do the same thing. I'm having trouble doing it via the registry.
Is there anything more specific you can help with?

thanks

For Passport/Unread Mail Issues:

Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2. Advanced/Manage
Passwords/Remove.

Tip:

Add Control Userpasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

or:

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Logon - Unread Mail page has a check box to disable the matter

Thank you Will, using Tweak has worked, just so I understand do you know what
emails this message is talking about? I don't use AOL only Hotmail and it
sure was not these.

Do you use Messenger? Either way, the address is listed here:

To remove an account or to change the count manually Go to:
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address].
