start screen blank but for screen saver

start screen blank but for the screen saver??? I wasin Internet Explorer yesterday trying to fix it to show the address box of the site Im looking at which woulndn't show. Did I mess up the start screen and loose all my Icons and task bars?

Try right clicking anywhere on the screen (it's already blank). In the
pop-up menu, point to "Arrange Icons by..." ; in next menu, is "Show Desktop
Icons" checkmarked ? If not, click on it. Hope this gets the icons back.
