I have recently re-installed my Office 2000 premium on a new machine.

The spell checker is not working (greyed out) in Word and Outlook Express.

Word did come up with an error message about a file missing but I don't remember what it was and am unable to re activte it.

My spelling is awful so for the sake of others any help will be most appreciated.

Peter

Sometimes the spelling checker in inactivated because text is formatted as
"Do not check spelling or grammar." To correct this, select the entire
document and go to Tools | Language | Set Language. Select the correct
language for the proofing tools.

Also, make sure that the spelling checker is enabled on the Spelling &
Grammar tab of Tools | Options.

Thank you for your help Suzanne.
Unfortunatley your suggestions didn't work, but added to my belief that there is/are some files missing.

"Also, make sure that the spelling checker is enabled on the Spelling &

When I checked this the Spelling & Grammer tab is greyd out :(

In that case I would suggest rerunning setup to install the proofing tools.
Go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, select Microsoft Office, click
Change, select Add or Remove Components, and then go from there.

Many thanks Suzanne.

That did the trick. I was trying to be a little to selective on my instalation. All working fine now.

Thank you Suzanne. Everything is working correctly now.
I was being a little to selective on my instalation choices.

Peter

Glad you got it sorted.

Upon installing Sevice Pack 2, I lost my connection to the spelling and
grammar check .dll files. I have tried repairing as suggested in this post.
The files are still not accessible. Spelling and Grarmmar check are both
enabled in options. Please help!

Try *uninstalling* the proofing tools, then reinstall them.

Hello Suzanne-

I tried your suggestion here to the spelling grammer check problem. I also
installed the most recent Microsoft Update and my spelling and grammer check
and thesaurus no longer works. The Thesaurus just doesn't respond to my
selection and spell check and grammer check gives me two errors: first, "Word
cannot find the spelling file MSSpell3.dll or mssp232.dll for."; and second,
"Word cannot find the grammer file msgr??32.dll for.".

I will check the spelling and grammer newsgroup but this seemed to come up
here, so I thought I would ask.

Thanks so much

Anne.

Anne,

Were you able to solve your problem?? I just started having the exact same
problem: "Word cannot find the grammar file msgr??32.dll for." Hit <enter>
then: "Word cannot find the spelling file MSSpell3.dll or mssp232.dll for."

When I try to do a Detect & Repair, I get the following error message:
""This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

HELP!!

Suzanne,

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I downloaded msicuu2.exe, but I
have a question/concern before I delete Word: when I go to reinstall it
(using my orignal Microsoft 2000 CD's), will it ask me for that long
registration code that came with the PC?? My PC is a few years old, and
those codes are long, long gone!

Thanks, Fred

Do you have to uninstall Office to correct this error (I didn't read the KB
article). If you just reinstall, having the CDs should suffice. If you do
uninstall and reinstall, you may well need the 25-character CD key.

Yes, you need to uninstall Office and then reinstall to correct the
Registry entries.

I don't recall if you are prompted for the CD key but I wouldn't try
it unless I had the CD key.

First call the OEM and ask for a new CD key. If they refuse (which I'm
sure they will but you need their refusal first) then call Microsoft
and ask about obtaining a new CD key. Explain to them that your OEM
refused to provide one to you and you need to uninstall/reinstall in
order to correct a *.msi error referred to in KB 295823. You may be
charged a nominal fee for this. Last I heard if you were charged it
would be around $10 US.

If you do obtain a new CD then proceed with the instructions in the KB
article Suzanne cited.

I appreciate your advice about the spell checkers and will try to fix mine
following your advice. But how can I post to a different newsgroup? This
site will only let me reply to an existing posting?
