SP2 won't let me stay connected using modem.

IAbout two weeks ago, I installed SP2 on my girl friend's daughter's computer.
Since then I have not been able to stay connected to the internet more than
five minutes.
I run SP2 on my laptop (Compaq Presario) great! When I installed it on my
girlfriend's daughter's computer, I followed all the recommended stuff. Clean
system of spyware, viruses, old internet files, cookies, etc. Upgraded all
drivers. Defragged system. Check to see if system ran good. Cleaned again.
Set restore point. Installed SP2.
After trying for several weeks of random advice, I uninstalled SP2 and went
through the whole process again. Same results.
System runs strong except it won't stay connected. She uses AOL. I installed
my WMConnect and same thing.
We don't use a router. And I tried without the XP firewall active or
anything else installed period. The system is a Dell 2.6G and 768Mb of
memory. We don't have a network. (I even physically removed her network card
incase of incompatibilities.)

As a side note: I noticed on my machine if I ran any program which used the
Internet connection prior to logging into the Internet, I would get bumped
off every five minutes too once I logged on. This condition would persist
until I rebooted may machine.

Is there a dial-up issue that I can’t find that may be causing these
disconnects?
Please refer to the Dell or the Compaq when replying.

Have you checked AOL for updates?

Newest version of AOL. But even when using my other ISP (WMconnect), I still
get kicked.

I have a rather sad solution to my story. :(

I came to this solution after trying everything I knew to solve my problem.
I also read everything involving others who had any type of connectivity
issues.

I decided to uninstall SP2 on my girlfriend's daughter's computer. A Dell
with a 2.6G processor and 768Mb memory. Her computer is incapatible with DEP.
When I tried to disable it, the modem still would not work. There may be more
incapatibilities in SP2 than just DEP. The modem or its driver maybe
incapatible eventhough I'm using the latest driver.

On my own time, I'll pour through memory dumps and try to pinpoint where the
problem is. But for now, I'll have to just be satisfied with SP1.

Thanks to everyone who posted or emailed me privately for your help.

If you see this, would you post or email me, whatever you prefer,
which Dell and what model modem and driver you have in that?

I'm facing a similar install with a similar machine and modem,
just as soon as (or IF) one software vendor figures out how to
fix their problems with SP2. If I knew I had the same setup
that you did that would adjust my position on whether to do try
or not.

Thanks
(email address is valid, I bait Microsoft targeted viruses with it)
