SP2 virus monitoring

I'm running NAV 9.05.15 (all updates installed) with XP SP2. The XP Security
Center warns that NAV reports being installed, but does not report its
status. Is this normal, or should NAV and XP be communicating better? (I
know I can suppress the warning by saying I'll monitor NAV myself.)

Visit the Symantec site. They are issuing an update to correct the problem,
that should be installed *before* sp2.

Symantec will shortly release a product update to provide native support
for the Windows Security Center status utility found in SP2.

Thanks. Hm, I wonder what happens if the Symantec update is installed
afterward. I'm not willing to risk uninstalling and reinstalling SP2 just to
get this interface to work.

Gary,

Symantec would have many unhappy customers if that was to happen. I fully
expect Symantec's fix to work pre or post SP2.

well today is august 10th and no update yet for sp2 on the norton site
wonder if they just have not gotten to it yet
robin

Symantec is saying that their update should be applied *before*
installing SP2. They should have had that ready a long time ago.
Hopefully, it will still work for those who already have SP2 installed.

Just now 9 AM out in Cupertino, CA. Probably by 1PM EDT
they might get around to it.

Still no updates on the Symantec site (12:10 pm PDT)

Well, August 10 has come and almost gone, and no update.

I can't figure out for the life of my why Symantec procrastinated with
releasing this update for SP2. Why didn't they roll this out with
their LiveUpdate several weeks ago? It would have have saved a lot of
anxiety in literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people,
as they apply WinXP SP2 and discover that SP2 doesn't seem to
understand the the Symantec client is installed and updated.

Perhaps they just couldn't develop it fast enough....

Sounds like they are "pulling a microsoft" by saying it will be released,
then changing it again. The date hasn't been changed tho, yet anyway.

for the record, its 2 am on the west coast USA and its the 11th. still no
update. maybe they're waiting till the consumers have downloaded it via
windows update, and thats not till the 16th.

But it all doesn't matter to me, i have to register for classes via the net,
so i won't be installing the pack till the 17th, if then at all. I plan to be
smart and wait a week or 2 to see if there are any other "complications" with
the pack.

just my $.02 cents;)

At 7AM EDT in the US, 8/11/04, The new WMI update to allow Security
Center in SP2 to communicate with Norton AV was downloaded onto my PC
and installed via LiveUpdate.

I had already installed XP SP2 on Monday evening so this lays to rest
the concerns of the order of install. In other words, even with SP2
already installed, the Symantec update will install properly and allow
for proper monitoring within XP's Security Center.

You should know that when this patch was first installed, a Symantec
dialog appeared with a checkbox asking if you wanted to enable this
feature which circumvents Norton's anti-tampering feature to allow
communication of Norton AV's status with outside programs. The
recommended option indicated in the dialog is to NOT enable this
feature.

I am sure that is to try and prevent any additional tech calls they
may get on the issue, but I enabled it anyway and it does work well.
And as far as "opening" Norton up in this way, as long as you have a
decent firewall, up to date virus defs, and use common sense, I don't
think this should be a problem despite Symantec's recommendation.

Hm, my NAV Live Update says it's up-to-date, but my XP Security Center still
complains of no status information if I enable its antivirus monitoring. And
I was never prompted to enable any NAV communication feature.

Could this be due to having a different version? I'm running NAV 2003.

Norton Firewall/Norton Internet Security
Installing Service Pack 2 will have no affect on Norton
Personal Firewall or Norton Internet Security. The Windows
Security Center will be aware that you have one of these
products installed, but it will not be able to determine
their working status due to
"""Symantec's tamper-protection technology."""

Looks to me like a cop out....

Larry:

I'm glad it worked for you!

I did run LiveUpdate several times today, but nothing. So I read
through Symantec's website, and it suggested that I run a check using
an ActiveX control to see if things were up-to-date.
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/sp2/asa.html
Well, the results page suggested that there was something I could
update -- which turned out to be an update to LiveUpdate itself. But
no WMI related thing was installed.

My Security Center still doesn't show my Virus Protection status as
"ON". My WMI services seems to be running, but for whatever reason,
the update I needed didn't install.

For others wondering about the Security Center and third-party
integration, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=883792&product=windowsxpsp2
It states that Norton Antivirus was the only program that couldn't
expose it's readiness stance natively. If you read the details:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/sp2/faq.html?src=ivr_na_con#9
you see how they call it "tamper protection".

Symantec's comprehensive info page can be found here:

Frank

I'm running the same version as you, NAV 2003.

The ones who did have success with the WMI update, can you please post
which version of NAV you are using?
