I am having install problems also. After getting a little over halfway
through the install process, I then get a message that says 'access denied.'
When I click 'ok' then the uninstall process begins. Before I begin the
installation process I close all programs runningin the background. Can
anyone help?

I tried 3 times to install sp2 and got the "Access Denied" message. I tried
3 times. The last one was with live Microsoft help. I copied the CD to
Desktop, then ran the computer in the safe mode. Attempted to install and
still got the message. Microsoft then told me to wait a few weeks and try
again after they have more experience with this problem.

Did you follow the Service Pack Installation checklist referenced in
my other post?

Hi

This can be caused by parts of the registry having insufficient access
rights. Please see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

You receive an "Access is denied" error message when you try to
install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=873148

Note, however, that as of 2004-09-01 this KB article is in error
under step 3. You should look in the setupapi.log file instead
of Svcpack.log.

Svcpack.log does not list what registry keys have permission issues,
but setupapi.log does (as referred in the SYMPTOMS section).

If you don't see what registry key it fails on in the setupapi.log,
you might need to enable Verbose logging.

To set the Verbose logging level, you can add a value to the following
registry key (using regedit.exe):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Value Name: LogLevel
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value (Hexadecimal): 0000FFFF

When finished, you should set it back to the original value:
Value (Hexadecimal): 20000000

Alternatively:

It might be better to just reset the security settings back to the
defaults for all registry keys (WinXP Pro only maybe, as I am not
sure that secedit.exe is available for WinXP Home).

More here on how to do that:

How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313222

If you only want to reset the registry permissions,
add this to the secedit command line:

/areas REGKEYS
