I've been having problems with my comp, so i want to
format; start clean. I got the SP2 cd, and i'm wondering
if i can do a clean install with that. IF SO, how? I'm
trying to format my comp, but not before i'm sure i can
install. SO i try to install the SP2 by doing a New
(instead of ungrade) install then i reboot and go into a
blue screen series of menues. Ending at one where it asks
if i want to partition/delete any drives. Well, i want to
format my c: before i install, but it won't let me
because i get a message saing " Unable to delete becuase
there are files on the C: that install needs". How can i
get around this?

Where did you get the SP2 CD?
Do you mean you or someone else downloaded WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A
and then burned it to CD?

Is this XP Home or Professional? What kind of XP CD do you have?
If it is not some OEM Recovery CD but either a Retail XP CD or OEM CD that is not the Recovery type,
then you should set up your BIOS Boot Sequence so that the cdrom drive is set before the hard drive
and then press a key to boot from the XP CD and eventually press Enter for Setup and then F8 to
accept the License Agreement and then if the current XP installation is detected (which I doubt) then
press ESCAPE to go to Partition Information and then you will be able to delete the current C: and
create a new C: and format it as NTFS and then install XP on that new C:

By the way, all peripherals such as printers, scanners, cameras, microscopes, toasters, etc should be disconnected first.
This includes your connection to the Internet! Very Important!

Then once XP is installed again, before you connect ANYTHING, then install XP SP2 and then install your AV / Firewall Program
and the rest of your drivers / programs.

SP2 is an add on to Windows XP....its an upgrade that fixes some problems the OS
has.
As such you need XP on your computer in order to install SP2. It will not let
you format/partition anything...
You will need your original XP Cd to do a new fresh installation formatting in
the process and then install SP2
