SP2 and Me

Some time ago I changed the text on my START button to my name. Used a reg
hacker, saved Explorer under a new name (ExplorerMYNAME.exe - kept copy of
old explorer), and then edited the registry to logon using
ExplorerMYNAME.exe - SP2 was not at all happy with this stunt and booted to
a black screen telling me ExplorerMYNAME would not open/function - I forget
the exact wording.

I decided to try ctrl-alt-del to see what happened - got the task master -
THANK YOU! - used FILE - NEW TASK(RUN...) to run regedit and undo what I had
done above - rebooted - all fine.

I share this experience in case anybody else has the same/similar problem.
SP2 seems to be running fine now.

it didn't recognize the Sygate Personal firewall - which I will continue to
use
(it did state it did not recognize all firewalls)
it recommended I turn on Automatic Updates - which I won't - I check every
day
it did recognize AVG free AV program - which I will continue to use
I am anxious to see how the pop up blocker works - maybe I'll remove Pop-Up
Stopper

Now I want to remove Messenger which was re-installed - just a nuisance to
me
seems to me there was a scripts on Kelly's or Doug Knox's page to do this
anybody remember?? TIA

Good Luck to all with SP2

Bill

Don't know how you uninstalled IMessenger, cause SP2 did not "re-install" it
on my machine. My procedure was: clean XP install w/o any networks, modem
etc (as a stand alone PC); next, unhide IMessenger, uninstall from Windows
Components.

Michael.

I found the script by Doug Knox - ran it and now Messenger is gone

xp_messsenger_remove.vbs - Remove Windows Messenger

"This is a Visual Basic Script file which will remove Windows® Messenger
from Windows® XP. It will also adjust your System Registry to prevent a long
delay when opening Outlook Express when Windows Messenger is removed or
disabled."

I don't know if this is the same as the IMessenger you mentioned.

Also - I went from 9.32 GB free space on C - 6.45 Gb free space
$NtServicePackUninstall$ - this hidden folder accounts for the exact
difference
I think I can delete this after I am sure all is well with SP2

I have 2 new folders on Local Disk (C)
36ce7ac26d30c1fb932f68bbc5e5ed - full of all sorts of stuff - about 2300
total objects
anybody have any idea what it is - can I delete it?
and
MSO Cache - about 100 total objects
anybody have any idea what it is - can I delete it?
