SNMP Service?

Fred

I have been getting a file in my temp folder that appears at each
startup. Only the previous file can be deleted while the current one "is
being used by another program."

After doing a lot of research, I've discovered that the
"Perflib_PerfdataXXX.dat" file was related to the SNMP service in
Windows XP Home.

My question is this; can I disable this service and still use my
network? I have a Netgear router wired to the desktop (where the file
appears) and wireless to my laptop (where there is no file).

What is SNMP for, and do I need it?

Thanks, Fred

Hi

If you don't know what SNMP is then you probably don't need it. It actually
stands for Simple Networking Management Protocol and is a means of
monitoring and managing 'devices' on a network. If you want to get rid of
it go to the Add/Remove Windows Components and if you look in the
Management & Monitoring Tools you will see the options for SNMP, just
untick it and carry on with the 'install' and it will be removed. Make sure
that you also do a virus scan on your system to ensure that you are clean.

Hi Bill,

Thanks but I read the "services" description already in Mgt & Monitoring. I've
changed the option from automatic to manual but my concern is over the question
of the effect of this action.

I already have my network installed and running but I want to know if that
"service" is needed by Windows or not to run the network. If not, then I will
probably just disable it rather than uninstall it - would that be OK?

Thanks, again, Fred

You can disable/remove the SNMP service without any adverse affects to the system. I have done this on many computers running XP and have yet to experience any problems.
