Slow computer still after XP clean install

I had a trojan virus and after removing the trojan my computer began to run
really slow. It seemed to 'hang up' and not process very quickly. I have
also began getting a message that my 'virtual memory is low'. None of this
happened before I got this trojan. My computer processed quickly and worked
well. I did a clean install of XP and this install seemed to go well during
the process. So far after the 'clean install' I have only loaded Norton
Antivirus, my wirless PCI device and my HP printer. I still have this slow
processing or hang-up problem and the low virtual memory problem. My
computer is a gateway 14GB desktop with 13 GB of free space.

Where do I look next? Could I have damaged my hard drive with trying to get
rid of the trojan? Have I created a hardware problem?

Two things I can think of off the top of my head. First, some HP Software is
"bloatware" and can slow down a system dramatically. I have expereienced
this on customer machines many times. Try removing that software first and
see if the problem goes away. the second thing is, Norton software,
especially if it is the "system works" type...is BLOATWARE to the nTH
degree....I will not install Norton software on customer systems, period.
For good (and free) home antivirus, try www.grisoft.com for AVG Antivirus
Free Edition v7. Good luck.

Have you gone to the Gateway site and downloaded the latest drivers for
your computer?

Things like your mobo chipset drivers, video card driver's . . . .

A 14GB harddrive sounds like it is pretty old, and it might have been
the harddrive that was slowing down your computer more than the trojan
to begin with.

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!

I completely agree ithe the AVG recommendation. I have loaded it on several
paoples computers including mine and have loved the how it uses so little of
the system resources. I am getting ready to get the netowrk version for a
couple of clients of mine.

Many big brand pc makers put in Quantum Bigfoot drives that ran at 4,800
RPM. Combine that with 128 meg ram and an old CPU and you're out of luck
with XP.
