Shut Down Problem after Win XP Upgrade

Gateway computer would not shut down properly after my upgrade from ME to XP.
Learned that Roxio CD Creator 5.0 was causing the problem. Using Add/Remove
in Control Panel I uninstalled this program. Now I am unable to get Win XP
to load. I get a blue screen with a message that Win XP didn't load properly
and that the system wouldn't start to keep from doing damage. The corrective
measures all failed to get the Win XP to load and ends up at the same blue
screen. Any help??

Can't get to "safe mode". All attempts to restart lead back to the same blue
screen and the message that Windows start up was aborted to protect the
system. I can try using the restore disks but that will take me all the way
back to Win ME install?
