I need help. I'm trying to set up my Dell Dimensions 8200
for dual boot with Windows xp and 98. I have XP on my 'C'
drive (NTFS format) and have drive 'E' and 'F' formated
with FAT32. How do I load Windows 98 onto either my 'E'
or 'F' drive. Or am I going about this the wrong way?
Thanks,
Mike

I did that 3 times over. It's simple. All you need is
Partition Magic 8,(with bootMagic) or System Commander.
Then, make a partition, and create that free space into a
FAT32 Partition. Be careful though. Don't so anything to
upset Windows XP in Windows 98. You might accidentally
make it into a Type 17 Partition, or Type 07, which is
unbootable, and I still haven't found a answer to solve
it. So, be careful, but its also good too. I won't blab
on for hours, but if Windows XP screws up, Windows 98 was
always there working, and was always able to fix Windows
Xp.

My experience is with windows me and xp. It is xp which
resolves the other operating systems on your drive auto
for you. This means that 98 should have been first for
you.
There could be a way with recovery console on Xp CD
(Systemroot/fixboot commands) or in Xp admin tools->
computer magement->disk management,change drive letter.

Seems to me that Me wants to go to c: and I don't know
what 98 will do.
Experimenting is one way to learn. Good luck.

As someguy said, you'll need a 3rd party boot manager, since your C: drive
is NTFS formatted. BootIt NG will allow you to do this, easily, and at
about half the price of partition magic. www.bootitng.com, 30 day
shareware.

As you probably learned from the MSKB article that was recommended,
you must have a bootable partition setup and formatted as FAT-32
before you can boot Win98. Win98 can not "see" your NTFS drive C and
by design, Win9X will not boot from drive E or F. I'm assuming both
those drives are logical in an extended partition on the same hard
drive.

The answer is you can't boot 98 from either E or F without the help of
a boot manager. (or you can reformat drive C to FAT-32 and first
install 98 then XP - lots of work) Go to www.terabyteunlimited.com
and take a look at BootIt Next Generation. An excellent boot manager
and partition utility plus more. Shareware, try before you buy.
