Seek CPU monitor in system tray

Does anyone know of a utility which would monitor cpu usage and sits
in the system tray of my WinXP system?

What I would like is a constantly visible icon to show graphically
what the cpu usage is.

-------

I once can across a neat cpu monitor which showed usage by the length
of a very thin horizontal bar which, if I recall correctly, was a the
top of the whole system tray. Does anyone know of this utility?

-------

OTOH a crude way of doing this would be to launch the XP task manager
and then minimize it to the systenm tray as its icon shows cpu usage.
Does anyone know how to (a) call task manager and (b) launch it so it
is minimized?

I don't know of any, Wow that would be neat though. I once
had a car that had two lights on the dash so you could
tell if you were getting good gas mileage. All I did was
watch the lights and never had any fun with that
car....lol probably never saved any gas either.

Use XP's Task Manager. I have it in my Startup folder. Open Task Manager and click on "Options". Make sure that "Minimnize on use" and "Hide when minimized" are checked. Now when you click on the "Minimize" (-) button, it will go to your systray and show a graph of the CPU usage.

To create a shortcut to Task Manager locate the file taskmgr.exe in
\WINDOWS\system32
Right-click taskmgr.exe and Create A Shortcut.
Now locate the shortcut and Cut/Paste it to the Startup folder of your User
Name:
\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Task Manager should now start when you boot-up.
Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
Change the Run option to Minimized.
Now open Task Manager and select it's Options menu.
Check Minimize On Use and also Hide When Minimized.
Now close Task Manager to save these settings.

If all's well you should now get Task Manager starting on boot-up minimized
in the System Tray.

I've done this and more often than not it doesn't appear in my system tray?!
On occaission it is there but I can find no rhyme or reason as to what is
making it work/not work. I am using XP Pro.

Have you tried the 'show always' option in the customize window of the task
bar properties?
(hoping that these terms were correct, since I have the Italian version)

What is the program name for Task Manager and where is it found?

taskmgr.exe in ...\windows\system32

I experienced this phenomena when I first started using XP Pro. It was caused by not enough RAM and L2 cache not working. Once I beefed the system up and let MS Bootvis program optimize my system startup, it started working correctly.

It may seem odd but after dpoing what you suggest, when I reboot I
get Task Manager automatically launched but it is full size.

If I look at its Options it has got "Minimize On Use" checked but it
does not launched minimized.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Which version are you using? The latest version that I can find is 1.4.2 and according to http://users.iafrica.com/d/da/dalen/tcplat.htm Dale still hasn't figured out how to get the CPU monitor part of TClock to work with NT. I find XP's Taskmonitor much easier to see than the thin line that TClock displays anyway. Still, TClock is a great program that others may like better.

Do you also have "Hide when minimized" checked?

Hmmm...I have 512MB of RAM and I am not sure what I can do about the L2
cache? I can rarely get it to show up in the system tray and it's just a
little annoying. What is MS Bootvis?

I have all 3 items under options selected. Like I said sometimes it works
and most times it doesn't.

Yes both "Minimize On Use" and "Hide when minimized" are check in
the Task Manager but it launches as a full size window.

I am linking to taskmgr.exe in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. Is this the
correct file and in the correct folder?
