yes, scan may be cheap but their customer service is dire - either on-line or if - as I did - you waste many hours driving to bolton and back to try and sort out your problem. I bought a motherboard which gave me 5 months of problems, during which time scan told me that the problem was with me and my pc. Eventually, the board was diagnosed as faulty, and repaired by scan. In the meantime, as i could afford no more wasted offline time, i bought another mobo from scan, which works fine. so when i left the faulty one to be repaired, i said i wanted a refund if found to be faulty, but even though it was, they wouldnt refund me so i now have two. On top of this, i have had 5 months of having to use a friend's pc, got way behind with project work, made many wasted trips to bolton (scan hq), and so on. if the goods are fine, great, but if not, you've backed a loser......

There have been quite a few people who have had the same problems as you empireurn. Can you check out the "Retailer Ratings" on the left menu, and leave some comments in there - as it would be a great help to other readers :)

I use Scan on a fairly regular basis especially since Dabs closed their collection counter a few months ago. I shop there purely on price and the fact I live ten minutes drive from them, the product knowledge of the counter staff is poor and as stated 'service' non existant. I've had to crack the whip a couple of times when gear has been faulty or they have tried to foist 'returned' items on me as new!
However 99% of the stuff has worked fine and luckily two of my friends ar IT pro's who usually sort out my PC problems for a couple of pints.
If I was only within mail order range of their site I wouldnt touch them with a bargepole there's plenty of other first class mail order operations to choose from.

Scan have had an RMA'ed video card of mine for a week now. I e-mailed them on Wednesday asking 'Any Progress?' - no reply.

I've just this minute e-mailed them again.

If I don't hear from them by Monday PM, I'm going to e-mail them constantly and send so many faxes their fax machines will run out of paper.

On the same subject, I ordered a spindle of Ritek DVD 4 x -R's from Tekheads, costing £30.00. They sent datawrite media which cost £10.00 less. I've sent them two e-mails and received one back, stating, in a badly spelled and punctuated message, that the matter has been passed to their accounts dept. That was three days ago.

I will not use either of these suppliers again.

The only two online resellers I can honestly vouch for are Overclockers.co.uk and Kustom PC's. Both excellent.

I really hate it when suppliers don't reply, or they reply with a message a 10 year old should could have written.

If a big company did this they wouldn't last 10 minutes! Ah well, If they continue down this road, they won't last long!

Lack of emails from scan dont mean they are going pop, nor does it mean they have lost your goods. I think It's just case of bad customer service.

I've known the company and it's owner for years, and they'll be around for a good time yet.

Part of the reason I started business it because Bolton didn't have a good, cheap and honest hardware supplier, especially cos you have to drive and wait hours for scan, and dabs dont allow collects anymore.

We started free local delivery for our customers, enabling them to receive their delivery in the evening (when they're in) and they love it :D

edit: Oops ! Just spotted how old the prevous post is!

Not to worry, still applies.

Well thats quite sad to hear about the Scan poor service, and tekheads ! I wont shop there tbh.

So far the best companies to buy from I think are Overclockers.co.uk and Ebuyer.

Ebuyer still my hand says yes/no but they have improved well enough id say.

Dont buy from Bolton PC

Worst company ever.

November 2007: 600 Pound Computer Arrives, Wrong processor, Wrong gfx card and Wouldnt switch on. Called (had to try 13 times) He claimed the phones were "Busy" Although they rang all the way through. They sent a Courier to take the computer and send another one, Took 14 days. Worked this time.

December 2008: After eventually getting the computer up and running, It stayed on for about 30 mins at a time, then overheated. There were NO fans built on the system, Only the one onboard the processor and on the gfx card. So i called around 15 times, no answers although the website said that all computers are fitted with all the fans needed to run the system, I had to fit my own.

Jan 2008: Usb ports stopped working, Nothing could be fixed about them, Had to replace.

June 2008: Whole computer stopped working, Called, Emailed - No answers. Decide to reformat myself, But Windows disk was broken, Had to use a friends disc to install. Once Reformatted and everything fixed, after a week or 2, It stopped turning on again.

Guys, Dont get ripped off by this company, They have taken enough money so far, So many reviews on the net about these, Some have even taken them to court.

Hope u guys enjoy your working computers

I have bought many products from Overclockers, Logitech G15, Razer Diamondback, Razer Copperhead and Razer Lachesis. All amazing. Had to send my G15 back to LOGITECH *Not Overclockers* because i wore the paint off the sliver part (overused but still worth claiming for a free new keyboard)

Rangesunit - re your first post above , you title it 'Dont buy from Bolton PC' whereas this thread is about Scan....are we talking about the same company?

Personally I never have any trouble getting through to Scan on the phone, and their customer service over the past couple of years from my experience has been excellent. The only thing that sometimes lets them down is the poor service of City Link couriers.

Regarding Overclockers - I have had few problems with them either, although I find their staff to be somewhat surly at times.

Exactly my thoughts thats what lets a lot of companies
down if they only knew it.... But there again some are aware of the fact but refuse to change couriers:confused:

Very bad experience

It's been a year since I went to scan but felt like I should say something about my experience. Bought a case from them and got home only to find that it had a massive dent in it. Didn't have time to take it back until the next weekend, when I did they said I had passed the time I could return the item. I was furious and left the case on the shop floor and walked out. Haven't been back since.
The whole experience of shopping at scan is dire. I can think of better things to do than to wait in a queue for half an hour only to get damaged goods.

I've since been to micro direct in Manchester bit further to go but a lot better experience and they have been going a lot longer than scan.

I hope people begin to realise that we should get good customer service as part of the product purchase and any company that doesn't give this should fold.

I can understand your frustration regarding the case, but I guess after the time delay in returning it they have no way of knowing whether the defect was there at the time or happened after sale - it probably would have been better if you had phoned them straight away and told them and explained you couldn't bring it back until the following weekend.

Thanks for replying. However I don't understand how time has anything to do with damaging the goods. I could have damaged it the minute I walked through my door if I wanted to. I was a strong advocate of scan before it's a good concept of quick service and cheaper price however the customer service had been getting to me for some time and I'd rather pay an extra couple of pounds and be happy I'm handing my money over to a well managed company than to a bunch of cowboys.

I'm not sure Scan can be regarded as a bunch of cowboys - but I guess it would have been nice if they had made some sort of goodwill gesture rather than sticking to their T&C's.

Never had a problem with Scan, bought a lot of stuff when i was buildind PC's for people, they gave me free shipping and and 5% off the total.

Found the RMA procedure to be quick, only fault was the technical support on the phone, the guy did not have a clue what he was on about.
