Running XP Home SP2.
When I press F8 during the Bios Boot to access Safe Mode, I get a screen
that allows me to select HD1, 2 or CDrom but no mention of Safe Mode with or
without Network capability.
On my other PC F8 allows me to select Normal , Safe Mode, Last known good
configuration etc.
Can anyone assist please?

You need to hit F8 after the BIOS loads but before Windows starts to
load. It is a small window of opportunity, made smaller by having an F8
function in your BIOS to choose a boot device.

That is a list of boot options -- your BIOS is configured to use F8 to bring
up that list. Wait until the POST test is done, then hit F8 -- it should
bring up the Windows boot list.

It seems that you F8 key is also the BIOS boot device menu for that PC.
Pressing F8 right after the BIOS screen should work.

You're pressing the key too early.

At the time you are pressing the key, the BIOS has control, and as far as it
is concerned Windows doesn't exist yet. Wait another few seconds.. but not
*too* long.

If you wait too long and wind up in regular mode, run MSCONFIG and on the
boot.ini tab, select /SAFEBOOT. Choose Apply, OK, and restart. The system
will start in Safe Mode until you rerun MSCONFIG again and de-select
/SAFEBOOT.

Hi Paul,

You need to hit F8 during boot, just after the BIOS info switches to black
screen. Or...

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig. Boot.Ini and check off /SafeBoot. Apply/Ok,
reboot.

Safe-Mode Boot Switches for Windows Boot.ini File

Another option: Add Safe Mode to the Boot Screen

Use as an example/guideline: Go to Start/Run and type in: C:\boot.ini and
copy/add what you want (Safe Mode or with Command Prompt), then save,
reboot.

Normal, Safe Mode and Command Prompt.

[boot loader]
timeout =15
default = multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "Windows XP Normal"
/fastdetect /sos)

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "Windows XP SAFE
Mode"/safeboot:minimal)

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "XP SAFE Mode with
Command Prompt" /safeboot:minimal(alternateshell)

You are doing it too early, and selecting your Bios's boot source menu
instead. Wait a moment until the HD starts to read (but well before the
Windows 'flag' appears), then hit F8
