additonal details would be helpful.

However, let me mention at least one way you can get this sort of error. If
you have a virtual CD drive installed (for reading only), that can be
incompatible with the writing funciton of a physical CD-RW drive. Disable
the virtual drive in the device manager and reboot.

Do you have multiple CD writing software installed? If so, uninstall all of
them and install only one of them.

Have you tried a read-test using the CD-RW drive? If there is some
mechnaical or elctrical problem with the drive or its connections it may not
be able to read either.

Think about things like "did the PC ever do writing?" If so, when and what
changed since then? If not, is this new hardware and/or new software?

Is this a problem that occurred after an upgrade to XP? Most pre-XP writing
software is incompatible with XP.

Is this a CD-R or a CD-RW? If a CD-RW, has it ever been written upon
before? If CD-RW is it fresh (blank), or was it formatted for packet
writing (e.g., InCd, DLA, DirectCD). If these questions do not make sense,
read your user's manual for the software, then try formulating a question.
