RIS, PXE - no computername fail on login

We're having a strange issue with RIS on a large
deployment. Specific users who have imaged over 100
systems each are now unable to get an image to start. PXE
boot happens fine and the user is prompted to
authenticate. The user authenticates then selects
automatic setup. At the next screen, they get an error
that the computername cannot be generated (or something
like that). In the RIS server event log, we get the

Event Type: Error
Event Source: BINLSVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1042
Date: 9/15/2004
Time: 12:07:39 PM
User: N/A
Computer: RIS
An error was generated by OS Chooser. The error code is in
the record data. User: xxxxxx Domain: xxxxx.domain.com
Computer Name:

Another user can authenticate and RIS works fine.

I'm suspecting there is a temporary computername assigned
during the initial boot process and it's somehow based on
the username with a finite number of combinations
available ... and we've hit that finite number.

Where is this saved and how do we reset that sequence so
that these users can continue imaging?
