When I right click a program, I get a generic error
message, then my desktop blanks out for a moment, closing
all open windows. It also makes icons in the system
tray disappear until I reboot. Any body?

This means that the Explorer shuts down and is restarted
automatically. This problem could be caused by some conflicting
software running in the background, but also by a defective system
file.

1. System files can be checked with the command
SFC /scannow
run via Start > Run.
2. To identify conflicting software, xheck your startup settings.
Applications that start with Windows can be found here:
- the WIN.INI, section [windows], entries "run=" and "load="
- the Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
- the folders
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
