reporting hackers? (or attacks)

I am not really sure if this will do any good, but I got hit pretty hard today and I was wanting to report the persons IP, but I don't know where to go...If someone could give me a heads up on this type of thing, I would appreciate it..

One starting point is http://www.arin.net/whois/index.html
you can enter the ip and get info on the registered owner.
If it's an ISP (has a block of assigned IPs) there should be an
(e-mail address removed) address
