Replace NTFS file system

I have a USB Mass storage external drive. It was working fine until I tried
to install a secondary hard drive. I treid to access the storage to tranfers
files to the secondary drive and received this message F: not formatted. It
(Mass storage) is now labeled as RAW. I rebooted and disconnected the
secondary HD and I still have this not formatted message. How can I get the
file system NTFS back to the storage drive without losing the files that are
on it? Thank you.
