"some error" - what error?

If this is an earlier version than Outlook 2003, then the PST file size
must not exceed 2GB. See this article how to crop an oversized PST file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296088

Make sure you have a backup of the PST file(s) before you start any
repair or crop operations.

During using inbox repair tool, it prompt that "some error prevent
inbox repair tool from continuing, no modification is done to the
file".This is outlook 2000 pst file. Now outlook cannot open that
file.

You write "The pst file is around 2gb in size"; so is it *over* or
*under* 2GB? If it is over, then use the crop tool from the link below.

If it's a Unicode PST, no. If it's an ANSI PST, yes. The fact that the one
you have is an "Outlook 2000 pst", no matter what version of Outlook opens
it, there will be a problem if it's 2GB. You want to create a new one in
Outlook 2003 and then transfer the data from the old one to the new one.

How to know whether it is unicode or ansi pst ?

If it was created with Outlook 2003 or later and you didn't specifically
select the 97-2002 compatible format, it is Unicode. If it was created by
Outlook 2002 or earlier or if you specifically told Outlook 2003 or 20007 to
create a 97-2002 format PST, it is ANSI.

Hi,your PST file is oversized. Microsoft Outlook 2002 and earlier versions limit the size of Personal Folders (PST) file to 2GB. Whenever the PST file reaches or exceeds that limit, you will not be able to open or load it any more, or you cannot add any new data to it. This is called oversized PST file problem. More detailed information can be found at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/2gb-pst.htm
You can use Advanced Outlook Repair to solve the problem, by either converting it into Outlook 2003 format ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/convert-2gb-pst.htm ), or splitting it into smaller pieces ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/split-2gb-pst.htm )
http://www.datanumen.com/aor/ contains the detailed information about Advanced Outlook Repair.
And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe
