Repair Install

I am thinking about resorting to a Repair Install of XP Pro because I
keep getting error messages in event viewer that services are not
loading (DCOM or WIA) and are hanging and then timing out which also
stops the loading to the desktop.

What are the advantages/disadvantages or things to know before I go to
this step?

I have run sfc_scannow and it did not restore any files that were
missing or corrupt.

You will loose your SP1 and all other XP updates, i.e., you will need to
re-install them.
