Renaming User?

A quick question. What is the most appropriate approach to changing a User
Name. I'm going to donate my old computer and would like to change the
user name from my name to something else. Currently, under Documents and
Settings, there are 3 users (in addition to Administrative) - All Users, My
name user, and Default User. I'd like to change "my name user" to
something other than my name. Is it a matter of just renaming the folder
or is it more complicated?

You should make a new user and name it whatever you want - perhaps
"Owner" if you want to be generic. Then log in as that new user and
delete your old user account. I assume that since you are doing this,
you're donating the computer with the operating system still installed.
Please be aware that even though you have deleted your personal data,
the data still remains on the hard drive and is relatively easy to
recover. A better idea would be to at least format the drive and
reinstall Windows cleanly. Be sure to include all cd's and Certificates
of Authority that go with the computer when donating it.

Hi Charlie

If you are going to donate your PC to someone else, the best way is to 'clean' install XP and then re-install any software that came with the PC - including all licenses:

The following article by MVP Michael Stevens will help you:

Thanks for suggestions. I did not have data on the C drive - all data and
user programs were on drives D & E. I removed everything from those drives
and reformatted them, but maybe reformatting C and reinstalling WinXP would
be the better way to go.

What's the best approach for reformatting and installing the OS?
Thanks
Charlie
