I have two XP-Pro W/SP2 running and I mistakenly type the workgroup name in
network setup wizard on the second computer. I re ran the network setup
wizard again figuring it would remove the mistyped one, but it did not, now
I have two work groups names on both computers. How do I remove the
mistyped workgroup?

Thanks

Hi

Right click on My Computer icon. Click on Properties choose the tab Computer
name. Click on the last button “Change” and change it to what ever you like
(do not forget to do so on every Computer that is on the Network).

A Windows computer can be a member of only one domain or workgroup at any time.
Where do you see these two workgroups - perhaps in Network Neighborhood / My
Network Places?

Entries in NN / MNP are placed there by the browser subsystem, which does not
update immediately. If you ignore those phantom entries, they will eventually
go away. Or, if you restart both computers, the browsers should reset, and the
phantom entries should go away faster.

Jack thanks for the information it worked, it indeed did remove the mistyped
workgroup name, but on the laptop if I go into My Network Place>Entire
Network>Microsoft Windows Network>Bobhome> I see DT Bsmt (Dt1) which is the
new name and DT Bsmt (Dtxp1) which is the old name and IBM-Laptop2 (R51xp2)
which is the new name and IBM-Laptop2 (Tpxp2) which is the old name. Right
clicking on them did not give me the option to remove/delete them. How do I
remove the Old names?

Also, on the desk top if I go into My Network Place>Entire Network>Microsoft
Windows Network>Bobhome> I get "Bobhome is not accessible. You might not
have permission, Etc." How do I fix it?

Jack & Chuck, thank you for the valuable information, it looks like powering
down & up solved my problem. Is there any way to force the Browser to reset
the names?

As far as posing my email address, I did not, I use office pro and email
program is outlook and it also runs the posting for this news group. It
does not give me (as far as I know) any way for me to enter my email address
other than typing it into the body of the message, my cable company must
assign the name for me - I would have picked a better one. If you think
they are looking out for me, you would be wrong, because they forward junk
email that's NOT even addressed to me.

Thanks again for the help, if ever I meet you I will buy the beer. If you
are not beer drinkers then you will have to accept my thanks.

I would bet that stopping then restarting the browser service would reset it
without you having to shut down the computer, if that's of any help.

Thanks for noting your email situation. That's one of the limitations of
posting thru Outlook. Interesting note about your user name - one reason to
avoid cox DOT net I would guess.

And for the record, I do enjoy beer.
