I'm using Windwos XP SP2. How can I permanently remove the QuickTime
icon from the system tray?

Thanks,
Virginia

It is a configuration option with Quicktime itself. I gave up on
Quicktime because their free version nags you periodically to buy their
full version. So I removed it, cleaned out the registry, and went to
QuickTime Alternative.

Right-Click on the icon, choose "Preferences" and choose "Browser Plugin"
from the drop-down. Uncheck "QuickTime system tray icon" checkbox. Close
that window.

Go to Start/run and type "msgonfig". Click on the startup tab and uncheck
the "qtask" or something like that, I don't remember the exact .exe file but
you can expand the "command" or "location" fields to find out which one it
is. Then delete QuickTime from your PC. It's an extremely annoying program.
If you don't, every time you click on a QT file it will automatically
reinstall the .exe file in the "Startup" menu.

Although I am a big fan of the K-Lite Codec Pack and the Real Alternative..
I have yet to have so much trouble with Quicktime to change to Quicktime
Alternative. Once you turn off Auto-Updates and the icon - I never am
bothered by Quicktime.

Thanks. I never would have found that by myself.

It seemed that every 1 day interval (i.e., the last use of QT had to be
over 24 hours ago) that I would get an intervening prompt when QT
started asking if I wanted to buy their Pro version. All I wanted was
the Player and without any fancy features. Just play the QT movie and
with no intervening solicitation. With their freebie player, every day
or so I would have to click on the Later button to close their
solicitation and get to playing the movie. I don't play QT movies very
often so it could be days before hitting another one and sure enough
there is that intervening solicitation.

I was also not interested in wasting the resources to load their qttask
process on Windows startup. If you removed it from the Run registry
key, QT would re-add that run entry when you next ran QT. You could
disable it in msconfig so it wouldn't get added again by QT.
