Removal of Taskbar Icons

Up until recently I was using a modem connected to my Ethernet port. I have
since changed to a USB modem but the icon (two TV screens) for the Ethernet
connection remains in the taskbar with a red X through it. If I click it,
it shows the Ethernet cable is disconnected. I have, of course, removed all
references I can find to the previous Ethernet modem but the icon persists.

Any advice on how to get rid of the icon, other than hiding unused icons in
the taskbar that would result in hiding icons I want displayed?
 
i believe going into your network connections folder and
disabling that connection will remove the icon from the
taskbar.
