I am trying to establish a link with my Mum so I can help her with PC
problems, because I can't just call round like I used to because I now live
200 miles away.

We have established a link with Windows Messenger and Whiteboard works OK.

She asks for Remote Assistance and receives message that I can also see on
my whiteboard, saying that I either don't have Remote Assistance installed,
or that it's disabled. How can I confirm either, because as far as I can
see, everything's fine.

Have your Mum initiate the action. Start>Help and Support
Under Ask for Assistance, click Invite a Friend...etc. Follow the
prompts. She can open her PC with you accessing it. It will be
limited but you can check it that way.

This is what she has been doing, but it keeps saying that I (the friend)
hasn't got or has disabled, Remote assistance.
