I'm getting the long winded informational message

"One of the files containingthe system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful

.... on each and every start up of my computer. This just started happening after several months of XP working just fine from the day it installed. I have used Windows update religiously, including SP 1a. The last fix I applied was for HighMAT formatting for Windows CDWriter

I've tried everything I know in my limited bag of tricks to shut down with a happy, backed-up registry and yet this message appears on every boot. A KB search only matches for the procedure to use the Recovery Console from Install CD boot to back up and restore the registry. My registry does not appear damaged enough to resort to this drastic a measure

Does anyone have an idea about how to resolve things to keep this process/message from happening

Many Thanks
Steve

Not doing all 5 hives can leave to the dreaded lsass.exe error during bootup. Usually due to the sam hive
Once you get this message, there is no turning back unless you have Fat32 for a file system to perform a 307545 with a boot disk

Jsut thought I would let you know

Thank you for all the advice. I do have a FAT file system but I am not daring enough to try 307545

I found that I had been infected with W32.Klez.H@mm. Running Norton AV (auto protect and e-mail protect), XP firewall, NAT router and I still got stung. Turned off System Recovery. Rebooted in Safe Mode with an updated Norton AV and ran a complete system scan which clean the virus. Rebooted in Safe Mode with Networking to run Norton's FixKlez script just to be sure. Checked as many registry trees as possible for other worm entires as outlined in the security alert

Well, the problem persists. msconfig shows that Norton AV should start but it doesn't. And I am still getting the "Registry has been recovered..." message which means that something is tweaking with the registry

Any ideas

Many thanks
Steve

When it comes to the registry either a 307545, system restore (which most likely is not an option if you followed the directions on the Norton website telling you to turn off system restore) or a format and clean install

PS...Once you start a 307545 its not as tough as it looks

Sorry pudge

Ron,

Thanks for telling it like it is. I kinda figured that I
would have to do a format and clean install. Fortunately,
I keep the OS in its own partition for just such an
occasion.

Before shutting off system restore, I tried a restore with
several restore points dated before the problems appeared
but restore consistently failed. At this point, I could
not trust any restore point or that diving into 307545
would eradicate the problem.

Many thanks for all your advice.

Steve
