registry data recovered

I have a Dell 4400 system, about a year old, that became infected with
spyware and/or trojans that required a complete wipe. It has a Pentium
4 1.5 ghz with 256 MB of RAM. After formatting and reinstalling XP,
everything seemed ok, until I loaded Service Pack 2. Right after the
installation, a message came up - "Oneof the files containing the
systems registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternated
copy. Everything seemed ok, until the next re-start and the same
message appeared, but this time shortcuts stopped working and there was
obviously some registry damage.

I've now formatted and restored again, but the same message appeared
after the SP2 update again. So far no repeat, but I'm concerned about
the same thing happening again. Any ideas as to what is causing this
message to appear after a clean install? What may be conflicting in
SP2? Can I repair the problem?

I'd suspect bad RAM. Do a test with Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org.
Make a bootable floppy with the precompiled Windows binary or download
the .iso if you have third-party burning software. In any case, boot
with the media you made and the test will run immediately. If you have
errors, replace the RAM. If the RAM is good, it would be a good idea to
do a hard drive test also. Get a diagnostic utility from the drive
mftr.'s website.

How to Troubleshoot Registry Corruption Issues
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=822705

I have been suspicious of a hardware problem. I installed a couple of
pieces of software and everything was going fine - then on a reboot, it
reported that a file was corrupt or missing -
windows\system32\config\system .

I've tried using the repair console, but to no avail. The only files
named system I could find on the XP disc were in the I386 directory. I
successfully copies system.in_, but neither of the other two would copy
and it did not resolve the boot up problem. So right now, I'm back to
square one after two reinstalls. Frustrating.

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry that Prevents Windows XP from
Starting:

Error Message: Windows Cannot Load Your Profile Because It May Be Corrupted

Create a New User or Restore the User Profile
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318011

Suggestions:

Right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Locate the
entries for your hard disks and double click each entry. On the Policies
tab, uncheck Enable write caching.

You will see a performance decrease because of this, but if the corrupt
registry/user profiles problems cease, then you'll be certain of the cause.

Logon to another account with admin privilege and run System Restore.
Choose the most recent restore point and SR should restore the user
hives.

Or...

Boot into safe mode and log in as Administrator. Copy ntuser.dat from
%windir%\repair to "Documents and Settings\[your user id]". Now do a system
restore to a point in time prior to when the corruption message began to
appear.

Or...

Relocate NTUserdat

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and find the profile you want to change and
then change ProfileImagePath to the ntuser.dat folder that you want to use.
You must manually copy or move the ntuser.dat file there.

Update:
I downloaded a low level format utility from the mfr. of the HDD, and
it tested ok. I picked up a different stick of RAM and I'm reloading
XP one more time. Will see if I can get SP2 to go without any errors
on reboot this time. Will let you know how I make out. Thanks for all
the responses.
