I have a new computer on order and I plan to give this computer with
XP Home Edition to a relative. I would like to change the registration
name from my name to her name. What is the procedure for doing it?
Is this a problem if a reinstallation of XP is required? I'm
concerned about what was filed at MS when XP was originally activated.

bs has been included as part of my e-mail address to reduce the
amount of spam mail. Change the 'bs'in my address to 'bellsouth'
to send me a message.

Just go to the User Account in Control Panel and you
could change the User Name and Password.

You wanted to change the registered owner not just the
account name and password right? To do that go>start\run
and type in regedit and click ok. Now follow this route by
clicking the + beside the entries in the following order.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion. Now click CurrentVersion to highlight
it and opent the sub keys in the right panel. You will see
registered owner here along with the organization. In
order to change the names there just right click on the
one you want to change and then click modify and then type
in the name you want. This has nothing to do with WPA
(windows Product Activation) as the copy you have of
windows XP is tied to the computer not the owner of that
computer. You have just successfully done your first
registry tweak. Congratulations. Keep smiling.

It is very dangerous to tell someone to work in their
regestery if they have to ask questions like this one ...

To all in the thread. I have run regedit before and made changes.
That's an easy task. I was concerned if the OS had to be reinstalled
to a newly formatted HDD, that it would require reactivation and there
might be a problem if the name was different. From reading other
messages it appears that the name used is unimportant as long as the
hardware signature has not changed.

Bill,
May I make a suggestion? Why not just restore the computer to it's original
shipped state and let them personalize it? I would not want to pass on any
of my computers with personal information to another person even a close
relative without first wiping the hard drive and reinstalling fresh.
If you want to help them out, you could run setup with their name and
information and apply all the necessary updates to bring XP up to the
current driver and critical updates. They could then start fresh without any
of your baggage carried over.

That's something I've considered. This is a system I built and used
the HDD from my previous system. That HDD was running 98SE. After I
had it up and running on this system, I upgraded to XP. I had too
many apps that were installed and I didn't want to start from scratch.
Since the XP disk is an upgrade version, I have to first install an
old OS, then do the up grade, etc. There doesn't seem to be an easy
way. I'd like to pass on a system that's already loaded and working.
I wish I had an easy way to move my installed apps to the system I
have on order. I've read mixed reviews about utilities that do that
i.e. Aloha Bob's PC Relocator.

William,
You don't need to install 98 first, boot from the XP CD and when prompted
replace the XP CD with a qualifying Windows CD. Setup will scan the CD and
if it qualifies, you will be prompted to replace the XP CD. See the page on
Clean Installing XP for more info.
And for transitioning your computer to the new one see the F.A.S.T. link.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.

That doesn't seem to transfer the installation of the apps, only the
settings and data of some of the apps. That means I have to dig out
all the installation disks of apps or locate the downloaded
installation files. I initially installed some of these packages
years ago. The list of programs supported by F.A.S.T. is quite
limited.

The only way to carry over installed programs is to use imaging software to
clone the old drive to the new system.
This would not be an option for your new computer.
F.A.S.T. can be extensively customized, but all apps will need to be
reinstalled.

Not true, there are some utilities that will do it, but there are
mixed reviews about how well they work. One is called Aloha Bob's PC
Relocator.

Thanks, looks very interesting.
If you try it, please post back with your results.
