Regisrty problems

I cannot access the HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run line
in the registry. When I click on the run key regedit hangs. All spyware
program also hang when they deep scan the registry. I think there is some
nasty stuff there. I have tried a bunch of virus and spyware removers and
have found a ton of stuff. I also cannot run msconfig. I put the HD in
another machine and ran spyware/virus scan on it to no avail. Suggetions
please.

Slave the drive to another XP system, then load the SOFTWARE hive using this method:

NOTE: In step 4 in the above link, locate the SOFTWARE hive (present in folder c:\windows\system32\config) and select Open.

Inspect the startup locations (HKLM..\Run) keys, and then unload the SOFTWARE hive.

I just tried the suggestion but regedit still hangs(not responding) on the
run key.

Start in Safe Mode.
