Recently opened Files List

The menue selection under Tools-Options-General to select
the ability to have "recently used files" will not let me
select the check box in both Word and Excel. How do I
get this feature to allow me to initiate the recently
used files list?
 
This is usually due to having suppressed the MRU list in Windows (Documents
on the Start menu) using TweakUI.
