I am using Windows XP (with NTFS format drives) and suddenly started experiencing loop of rebooting, the blue error screen quickly disappears and cannot be read. Lately I did not install any new hardware or software. Is this a virus ? I have tried all possible solutions which I could but the loop of boot does not stop, it also does not let me choose the options like "last best known configuration... or "safe mode" Only thing I can do to boot with an old floppy and stay on the DOS prompt. Is there any solution other than reformatting?

Update your virus definitions and run a virus scan. There's a possibility
that you might have gotten hit by the Blaster virus.

I doubt its the blaster worm. I'd run a chkdsk from the Windows XP CD. If
this doesn't work, you could always do a repair installation from the CD.
This would allow you to keep your settings and documents and most likely
repair this problem. Keep in mind you will want to reapply SP1 and all
hotfixes after repairing.

I had a similar problem, which turned out to be a corrupt MBR. This was
repaired from the restore facility on the XP CD, along with assistance from

If you press F8 during the startup, you will have a choice to boot into safe
mode. You can then try and fix your problem from there.

I had a similar problem which turned out to be my video card drivers.

You have a virus. There was and still is a virus on the
internet that caused this problem. It started about 3
months ago. If you disconnect from the internet you will
probably stop rebooting. Try getting rid of the virus by
installing some virus protection software. The Norton
site had a small free program that would get rid of this
problem. Can't remember the name of it. Probably any
current virus software will also get rid of it. You also
have to download the XP upgrades to prevent this from
happening again.

I'd say you have a bad memory module. I've had this happen twice on two
different PCs; same symtom - they would randomly reboot.
