I used to remember getting a certain read receipt for unread messages that
was something like ""Your message was deleted without being read.". I'm at a
new job now and this one particular recept is not being generated. The
others however are (as configured on the Outlook 2000\2003 clients) What
gives? How come we get all other receipts but not the one for unread
messages?

I haven't seen anything to this effect before, however it could be due to
the fact that the user isn't deleting the message ... just sending it to the
trash unread.

Yes this the case. I have tested backward and forward with Outlook 2003 and
2000 clients. Delivery receipts work fine, when messages are opened read
receipts are sent (2003 client has to acknowledge receipt being sent), but
the 'deleted without being read' receipts are not working at all. Very
strange especially since you are prompted for receipt acknowledgment on
Outlook 2003 when deleting right from preview pane.

I haev even experimented with turning on and off 'Outlook Cached Mode' on
the 2003 Outlook client. This changes nothing.

Hey Microsoft, is this change by design with Exchange 2003 server?

As Brian said, deleting the message to Deleted Items will not send a
"deleted while unread" receipt - only emptying Deleted Items will do that.

And as most of us know, many users never seem to empty the deleted items
folder on a frequent basis. Find a user from whom you're expecting a 'Not
read' receipt and see if your message is still sitting in their DI folder
and marked as unread. If so, empty their DI folder and see if you are then
delivered your expected receipt.
