Following a hard drive replacement (successfully Ghosted) WinXP (SP1) is
demanding re-activation but when I click "Yes" in agreement it simply returns
me to the Welcome screen without offering any further instructions or
options.

What do I need to do to re-activate?

David,

See if this will work for you:

Go to Start, Run and type in Regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll, hit OK to run this.

Next do the same thing with the following command: Regsvr32.exe licdll.dll
and hit OK to run this.

Now try to activate again.

Len,

Thanks, but this is difficult to try as it never boots past the Welcome
screen -- no way to Run anything. I noticed the command order you've
recommended is just the reverse of what is described in

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329261

and I'm pretty sure XP-AntiSpy isn't installed. So you've really peaked my
curiousity as to why you suggested what you did. Is there another way I
could try those commands?

See if you can do a Repair Install.
