random instant reboots? why?

every once in a while, at random times, my computer will just make a click
noise, the screen will go blank, and then it will start booting from the ABIT
screen again. i have no key combination for such an action (not that i know
of anyway) and i did nothing to trigger this. i also had a similar problem
with the counterstrike source beta, but this just happened while doing
nothing but checking a forum i use a lot (without error) and talking to
someone on AIM. i really have no idea what this one is. (this was also
happening with CS:Source before my video card problem, so they are most
likely unrelated)

added:just happened again, twice. once after i closed adaware, and then
after i booted up and turned on ABITAQ, my motherboard's temp reading
program. i sent an error reprot (it only gave me the option the second time)
and it metnions that it could be a driver, but which one would cause this? i
have the latest video card drivers...

i might also add that i fixed a strange problem with my video card
yesterday, the drivers somehow got completely wiped and my computer didnt
recognize the video card at all. i installed the latest drivers onto a 'new'
unrecognized device (my card) and that fixed it. this was where this problem
started when i was NOT playing counter strike source. i would appreciate any
help, and if you need any screenshots or more info please tell me.

could be lots of problems

check the event viewer start run eventvwr

Other possible problems

power supply

processor overheating

heatsink making poor contact with processor

memory problem or overheating

others will probably think of more

there are burn in test programs you could try to stress your system.

Is your computer a brand name with no upgrades?

homebuilt? If so is it rated for your processor

well, it was originally a compaq, but i ended up putting in a new motherbaord
and processor (quadrouple-checked if they were compatible). i added a hard
drive and another 512 mb of ram (the same speed). i also put the whole system
into a nicer case with a better and higher rated power supply. it is not
overclocked, and the prime95 test yeilded a MAX of 140* fahrenheit (on
innacurate temperature reading drivers, the changed ones would have lowered
it by 15-20 degrees) right now it runs at about 103 degrees semi-idle (web
browsing and aim) and the pwm is about 95 degrees. the system temp is
maintained at about 80 degrees by 4 case fans. the video card has its own
aftermarket heatsink and fan too. like i said, this all really started up
after i had the video card problem.

Do you have drivers that came with your card, sometimes newer is not
better. Are all the fans set for max air flow?(not fighting each other)
Try using a different slot.Have you run any benchmarking tools like everest?

i have not run any benchmarking, and the case fans are 3 in on the front and
side and one out on the back. (plus the one on the power supply) all on high
(full power i guess) i will try the older drivers that i was using before
they somehow got wiped. i am wondering though, it sounds like a click and
then the normal quiet whining sound (hard drive?) stops instantly, then 5
seconds after it powers back up automatically, i hear it wind up again. it
might not be the hard drive, but i cant think if any other part that would
make that noise and cause such a problem. would cloning my current hard drive
with windows onto a different hard drive be a good idea for a test?
