I've encountered a very strange problem that I can't solve on my own.
About once every 2 days, upon startup, programs won't load for about 5
minutes. When I click the icons for all programs, nothing happens until
about 5 minutes later when they all open normally. However, the computer
doesn't freeze (in the usual sense of the word) during the waiting time
because I can open folders, drag icons, open the Start menu, etc. After
programs load, the computer functions normally.

During the waiting period, I can not open the Task Manager or shut down
the computer, normally or through Ctrl+Alt+Delete. I have a very fast
computer with plenty of RAM. I'm using Anti-virus software which is
up-to-date. MCE 2002 SP2. Does anyone have any ideas what is going on
and what I can do to correct it?

Thank you.

I presume you are using XP. My computer behaves similarly, taking 3-4
min to load programs. Apparently, something is being written to disk,
because the disk light remains red.
If you are the only user of the computer, I suggest you make it
Hibernate rather than shut off. It makes loading is much faster.
Also, look for programs like Google Desktop search, antivirus startup
scan, etc. which start doing their thing as soon as windows is started.

ARe u low on Hd space? Try running a cleanup, run chkdsk and defragment, probably if the associated files to these programs are fragged... Its just a basic thing, you cud try it anyways.

I finally solved the problem which plagued me for weeks after I
installed PC SpeedScan Pro, a program distibuted by Ascentive LLC which
is designed to remove obsolete and redundant information from the
Windows Registry.

I clicked the FIX button and the problem disappeared!
