Printing Defaults to Letter

A

Adele Wiseman

We have just upgraded our network to WinXP Pro
printing to HP Laserjet 2300n

The printers are set up for A4 both at the printer and driver on the PC;s

Each time we try to print the printer asks to load Letter

The regional settings are set for UK
I can't see any where to set this default in XP or Office

We are having to manually get the printer print and its driving me mad

Any Ideas?

Many thanks

You can set the defaults for each printer by goign to printers, find your
printer from the list and right click>properties

Click the Printing Preference button and go ahead and set it up. If your
printer has multiple trays, there may be some option that has different
kinds of media on each tray and other options like that. Most of the type
the tray source default is auto select but it sounds like it could be set on
manual feed.

Oh, I'm sorry, thought you mean, it asks you to load paper.

Well, I know this sounds very fundamental but I guess I shoudl ask anyways.
When you are going to print your document did you choose A4 paper in the
settings before printing?

All the settings are set for A4 in properties and on the printer, yes their
are multiple choices for paper source, manual feed, and two others. We tend
to use the large capacity tray for plain paper, with the other tray for
headed paper and the manual feed for labels.
It seems that every time we start an application it defaults to letter,
surely we should be able to default to A4

Well, the default for each application would be whatever is default for the
system. You can set them each time you go to print from any program, some
print drivers can save templates but you always have to respecify when you
close and relaunch the program. If you always print on a specific paper
size, page orientation and paper tray etc... regardless of the application,
then yeah, you wanna make this default on the system.

As I wrote in my first post, just go start>control>printers Then right
click on your printer>properties click printing preferences button. Anything
you set in here will become the system default for that printer. After doing
this, each program will print to these settings regardless of you opening or
closing the program

Now, if you are saying you've done all this and despite the defaults or
whatever template your are using, it still calls for plain letter paper
after setting it to A4, then that's pretty strange. You'll probably wanna
call HP support for that.

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you just resume with A4 paper in?

Office Ought to set it up from the Properties of the default printer, as
set in Printers and faxes, r-click the printer, Properties and on a page
like Device Settings.

If you load Office's normal.dot you should be able to set File - Page
Setup - Paper and save it

Thanks Alex

That makes sense, I will try it tomorrow
I take it that it should be saved as a *.dot
Do I have to do the same to the other templates in Word?
Does the same apply to Excel or does the default carry over?

Best regards

Dennis
