PPPoE under XP Connection Problem

Hi,

I have a broadband connection (DSL). I am running XP Pro on a desktop
and also my laptop. Using the native XP PPPoE on the desktop, I cannot
connect to my ISP unless I:

a/ Wait about 10 minutes after boot
b/ Cycle through 'Connect' - 'Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPoE)'
- 'Cancel' about 100 times. After this, I can disconnect and reconnect
at will until reboot.

On the laptop, I have no problem at all (but it is not always here).

Prior to a recent upgrade, I used Enternet for the same service and it
worked fine.

Does anyone have any idea what goes on here? My ISP is no help.

Also running:

Norton Internet Security 2002 (same behaviour when not installed)
NAV 2002

Any help appreciated,

Thanks

BW

How fast is your system? What do you have starting up on your system? I've
not have this problem in a long time under XP, but application were still
starting up when I attempted to connect to the internet right after logging
in. If I waited for all the applications to complete the start up, it
worked fine. I believe I was tinkering with the Oracle database and one of
the startup programs was trying to connect to a system/port that was not
reachable.

Thanks for the reply - the system is an Athlon 1800 on a Gigabyte
motherboard. Apart from the Norton stuff, I have very little actually
starting up at boot, but I have noted a delay of about a minute from
the time I am logged in until I can get a response from the system. I
can't start the broadband during this delay anyway - I put it down to
XP loading VXDs or whatever but pretending to be ready.

I'll try to see if there is something that is taking an inordinate
time to bring itself to life.

Thanks,

BW
