pop3 and outlook 2003

I have been using outlook 2003 to retrieve emails from a yahoo business
account. It's worked so far with my current POP3 setting but suddenly
stopped. I get this message:"The operation timed out waiting for a response
from the receiving (pop3) server. I get a similar one for outgoing mail. I
have a portable device which uses the same settings and successfully sends
and receives messages. How can i repair this problem with Outlook?

Disable e-mail scanning by your anti-virus program

I have a portable "device", too, but the law says that I'm not allowed to
expose it in public.

I have been using Office 2003 on my laptop since June 2005. I had set up my
Outlook to receive my yahoo email. Everything has been working fine until
Friday! Now I am receiving this error message:

Task 'Yahoo Mail - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation
timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you
continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).'

I have disabled my Norton Anti-Virus program but did not correct the
problem. I have tried creating a new email profile. That did not work either.
I have worked with my ISP and they couldn't fix the problem. They said that
Outlook was corrupted and I needed to uninstall and reinstall it. But then I
would lose all my data.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Debbie

The isp is full of crap - reinstalls rarely fix anything detect and repair
can't... so try detect and repair on the Help menu.

To verify - you have a paid yahoo account that supports POP3? Can you
connect to the account using OE?

Hi Diane:

Thank you for your response. Yes I have a paid DSL SBC Yahoo account
that supports POP3. I have been running Outlook successfully for 6
months, until Friday.

I just went into OE and set it up. I received the following errors:
--------
A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account:
'pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com', Protocol:
POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

The host 'pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com' could not be found. Please verify
that you have entered the server name correctly. Account:
'pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com', Protocol:
POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D
-------

This same problem happened on my desktop computer and I wasn't able to
fix it. I didn't uninstall and reinstall. I had Geek Squad come out and
the tech told me that my 1.5 year old hard drive was failing. He said
that was my problem. I have bought the new drive but haven't put it in
yet.

I find it very suspicious that the same exact problem is happening on
two different computers.

Next Step: I will go to the help menu and try fix and repair.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help,
Debbie

Open a command line window and enter

ping pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com

to see if you get a response. If it was working fine until Friday, then I'd
suspect a server error

Without more evidence of a drive failure, I think the Gook Squad is feeding
you a line to get you to shop at Best Buy. Have you run CHKDSK on the
"failing" drive?

Yea, me too. That's why I think it's a server problem. If the PING works,
write back and we can try some other diagnostics. If the PING doesn't work,
then the server (or your PC's networking) has a problem.
