pls help..."Windows Explorer" disappears regularly...

I installed WinXP Pro about a week ago.
Started with a blank HDD, no OS prior.

3 days ago I noticed that "windows explorer" (not IE)
terminates after about 1 or 2 mins. When it terminates
the icons on the desktop all go away for a brief time (5-10 secs).
The desktop backdrop image never goes away, and the icons all
come back in their original placement.

This is quite annoying.

has anyone here ever seen this?
is it a virus?
(I ran the latest Norton AV twice, came up clean)

thanks for any replies, I searched around but
couldn't find another description exactly
matching my symptoms.

I'm having the same problem, FREQUENTLY! I haven't narrowed it down to any specific program or action, it happens OFTEN. It often happens while actively using Explorer. (This is Explorer, not IE.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.
