In a small LAN, when I want to access the "Shared Documents" of a specific
PC, windows logon dialoge box appears to ask for the user name and password
of the target pc. Each time I have to type the user name and the password to
be able to access the shared documents. There is no Remember password
checkbox anywhere. How can I make winXp remember the password and username
to be able to access the "Shared Documents" of a winXp Pro Sp2?

All the PCs(8) run on winXp pro/home SP2. Some of them show the Remember
password check box. But others don't. I wonder why some pcs have this check
box and some don't.

I have EveryOne with full control in the security tab of Shared Documents.

Any kind of help is much appreciated.

The simplest solution would be to setup and use a common account / user, with an
identical, non-blank, password, on all computers. With XP Home involved, this
won't help. If you're going to have transparent access on all computers, on a
mixed LAN, you'll need to use Guest authentication on all computers.

This is an annoying limitation of XP Home and is well explained in the link
from Chuck. If, for one reason or another, you do not want to move to
Simple File Sharing across the board and depending on your security
requirements, you can alternatively run a start up batch file on the XP home
machines to map the share. Some of my small business clients have gone this
route for various reasons. I have a sample batch file on my web site called
"EasyMap" that might be of interest.

Million thanks for your reply and the explanation.
I have mapped the shared folder as Drive Y: on all the PCs and still have
the problem. Anyhow I will give your batch file a test to see if it can
solve the problem. and will post the result once more.

I appreciate your help

Million thanks for the link. It contains a lot of good info on networking
and I have to spend a little time to go through it. I don't like to activate
the Guest account, but if it's the only solution, I have to do it.

I appreciate your help

Well, if you're going to run XP Home, you'll have to activate Guest there. If
you don't mind dual authentication (some Guest, some non-Guest), then you can
avoid it on the XP Pro computers. Maybe the GTS batch solution will simplify
things a bit. Just let us know please.

Interesting thread - following quotes from original post: "How can I make
winXp remember the password and username
to be able to access the "Shared Documents" of a winXp Pro Sp2?" and "All
the PCs(8) run on winXp pro/home SP2".
First quote refers to problem with XP Pro unit. - thread "detours" to XP
Home. Second quote needs clarification -e.g. is subject of post XP Pro > XP
Pro or XP Home > XP pro, etc.
