When I open a picture I have one program that automaticly
opens my pictures. How do you change the default
selection from one program to another?

Right click on one of those pictures and choose "Open With", then click
"Choose Program" and find the program you want.

I agree that should work, but I tried it last night and it
wouldn't "take" the switch. I prefer to use a simple
viewer/editor and the built-in one is just a viewer, so I
need to change it.

Your viewer/editor might have some setting (perhaps under Tools/Options) to
allow you to associate it with certain file types. If not then _with care_
you can do it this way..

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
On the File Types tab

...you will get a list of file types and the "associated" program that will
be started when the fill is double clicked. You select the file type you
want to re-associate and click change. Then select your viewer/editor
program.
