Hi,

I've installed an ASUS nVidia FX5200 card on my machine. It comes with an
applet on the CD that runs on the system tray: Asus Control Panel. If I log
on as an admin and run games, everything is fine. If I log on as a standard
user (with non admin rights) Asus Control Panel crashes but the game still
runs fine.

Has anyone already seen this? And how can it be fixed? (apart from
uninstalling Asus Control Panel or avoiding to run it)

Thanks in advance,
Vince C.

Hi Vince,

It's likely because the other users don't have appropriate permissions on
files/folders that the control applet writes to. See if this helps:

Thanks, Rick.

Unfortunately, the program I mentioned is run from the registry,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\...\Run. Should I use "runas"?

A good place to post this query would be at: alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus

Hi Vince,

It's initiated (started) from the registry, but the folders it is
accessing/writing to are what is causing the problem. If it starts, that
means the user already has permissions to run it.

I have absolutely no idea of what folders it has to access. It's an nVidia
desktop tool and I don't have any documentation on how it works
internally... So I can't guess what are the folders I have to grant write
access to. I even wonder if there are any.

Hi,

Most likely the system32 folder, the article that I originally pointed you
to describes how to do this (the method varies by system type).

Hi Vince,

Since you are not using any of the customizing features of the desktop tool, and
are able to run your software and video games without it, I would recommend
you disable it from your start-ups, either by unchecking it's entry in msconfig or
removing it's entry in regedit. The gaming mantra for process is "Less is Best"! ;-)
