If you save the attachment to disk and then double click on it, does your
PDF reader open?

HI Barry, I already have it installed,, this issue with the pdf not being
able to be opened just started yesterday ,,, I was able to open previously
and I can save the attachement and then open it,, not sure why I can not view
the attached pdf from the e-mail

I have the same problem and Outlook has opened .pdf attachments without
saving the attachment first.
Is there a setting or something in Outlook that restores the "click and
open" function for .pdf attachements?

Exactly what happens when you try? Exactly what messages do you see? What
version of Outlook?

Same questions to you: what version of Outlook? What happens when you try?
WHat is the exact text of any errors you see? Does it open if you save it
to disk first?

I get the "application not found" message. Yes, I can save the attachment to
the hard drive and then open it...which is very different than earlier
Outlook or Windows programs. I have Outlook 2002 (10.6515.6735) SP3 and
Windows XP Professional (version 5.1.2600 SP2 - Build 2600).

Is there a way to open the .pdf attachment without saving it to disk?
thanks.

Well, nonetheless, I'd check the PDF file type settings in Control Panel's
Folder Options.

Actually, no. While opening an attachment from within the message looks
like you're opening it without saving it, the file first gets written to a
temporary file and that file gets opened.

Thanks, Brian,

yes, the "Folder Options" include pdf files and Adobe's Reader.

I understand the "temporary file" creation the Windows does automatically.
My question was about MY action to save it to disk.

It sounds like this version of Outlook interacts with the security
"features" that Microsoft has embedded into Outlook and/or this Windows XP
version. If that cannot be turn-off, please just tell me.

My point is that you cannot open ANY file without it having been saved to
disk, either explicitly by you or implicitly by the program containing it.
A file doesn't exist until it's on disk.

To the best of my knowledge, the folder options completely control the
opening of a specific file type, even when in an attachment. Compare the
Folder Options for your PDF files to a file type that works or to the PDF
file type options on a PC where you can open a PDF file from Outlook and see
if there are any differences in any of the option dialogue pages. My Open
action, for example, contains

"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" "%1"

in the "Application used to perform action" field, the "Use DDE" option
checked, "AcroRd32" in the "Application" field, and "System" in the "Topic"
field.

Brian...it works!
I again went to the Folders Options under Control Panel and again found the
..pdf settings...which were still the Adobe Acrobat.

However, based on your notes, I went to the Advanced Settings and found that
the Acrobat Reader was NOT selected as the default application to open the
..pdf files. Now that it is set as the default application...it is used when
I open the .pdf attachment file while in Outlook.

Thank you! I appreciate your tenacity in solving this problem for me.
Based on some of the other discussion posts, it may be that Acrobat Reader is
not set as their default application for the pdf attachment.

Well, Adobe Acrobat should certainly be as capable of opening PDF files as
Acrobat Reader.

Of course, with this change, you also will get Acrobat Reader opening any
PDF file from a WIndows folder as well when you double-click it. That may
or may not be the action you want.

I am having this same problem but with jpg files. I was always able to
simply click on pictures in my e-mail in or sent boxes, and they would
automatically open. As of today all of sudden I get "Application not found"
message every time I try to open a pic in e-mail. I have tried to go to
Folders options but can't find it in my Control Panel or in Windows Explorer
tools to even check there for what the default program is to open these files
in Outlook. The only programs that appear (in Explorer under Internet
Options) in order to specify which program to use for each internet option
are: HTML editor, E-mail, Newsgroups, Internet Call, Calendar and Contact
List. HELP!!! I am using Windows Explorer Version 7.0.5730.11 and
Microsoft Outlook 2002 (10.6822.6830) SP3 with Windows XP

So, when you click Tools in Windows Explorer, what appears in the menu? Do
you have a double down-arrow at the bottom of the menu?

Thanks for the response. How and where do I go to "Click to show or hide
original message or reply text." ?

I'm sorry, but I don't think I ever used that phrase in my most recent
reponse and I don't see it in the one you quoted, so I'm unsure of the
context. Care to elucidate?
