Outlook 2003 hangs when going to Reply

Actually, MS apps hangs periodically. Already disabled Windows Update. Using
AVG Free AV. XP Pro, SP3. Mostly it's Outlook 2003 that hangs, currently when
I go to Reply to an email. Thought I'd already turned off any add ins. Any
suggestions? Please be specific and tutorial in answers.....I'm only a puter
geek wanna be.
 
Open Outlook in safe mode:

Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe

See if the behaviour continues.

Do you have AVG actively scanning incoming/outgoing emails? This can cause a
problem as well. Please advise.

No need to disable Windows Update so you can turn that back on.
 
Safe mode didn't fix the behaviour but in reading other posts saw that addins
can be an issue. I found those and inactivated all but the one I actually
recognized and all MS products functioning well and easily now. No more
hanging. I'll turn WU back on. I do check AVG to see if it's running if I'm
experiencing issues but if anything it only slows something down, haven't
seen it causes hanging yet. Thank you.
