I'm having a problem with Outlook 2002 and Norton AntiSpam. With NA
enabled, some of my email will come in okay, then I get the followin
error message: "Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A)
'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receivin
(POP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact you
server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP)."

I've contacted my ISP (Cox Communications) but they weren't able t
help. They thought the problem was with my Norton AntiVirus scannin
my email. I disabled that, but it didn't help any. Same results wit
Microsoft Support. However, on a whim, I disabled Norton AntiSpam an
my incoming email poured in - SPAM and all.

Has anyone else run into this problem, and if so, did you find
solution?

Thanks.

As you can see in the following article:

813518.KB.EN-US OL: You Receive Time-Out Error 0x8004210a or 0x800ccc19 When You View a
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;81351

Norton AV will sometimes initate these symptoms once the e-mail scanning feature has been started.
You can reconfigure to see if it will behave as initially indicated or you may have to uninstall the
program.

Of course, you can also choose to stop using Outlook and use Outlook Express or another e-mail
program if the issue continues.

I experienced the exact same thing this afternoon---I am using Outlook
2003 and Norton Internet Security 2004. The specific error was:

Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out
waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you
continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).'

I also turned off Anti-Spam and my e-mail downloaded properly. I
believe the problem is related to a specific e-mail, or e-mails, which
causes Anti-Spam to stall when downloading messages. I say this for
the following reason. I have two e-mail accounts with the same ISP,
and both accounts use the exact same server settings. One account
worked fine, while the other didn't. The one account that was
experiencing problems worked fine in the past, but suddenly began to
time out when checking mail. This particular account is now working
fine again after disabling Anti-Spam, downloading messages, and
re-enabling Anti-Spam. One of those pieces of junk mail must have had
something about it (in the header or body?) which confused Anti-Spam
and caused it to stall. Perhaps this was an attempt by spammers to
circumvent anti-spam software?

I'll write Norton and see if they've had similar issues reported. I
suggest that anyone experiencing this also write Norton so they come
up with a patch.
