Outlok doesn't recognize .pst file

I recently restarted my computer from hibernation mode. For some reason,
the computer hanged, and the monitor indicator light was blinking as if in
suspend mode. I manually shut down the computer and restarted it. Now,
when I try to access Outlook, I get the error message:

"Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The file C:\ documents and
settings\username\local settings\application
data\Microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst is not a personal folders file."

I can go into Windows Explorer and see the file. The size is 158,737 KB.

I tried entering a new profile and renaming the old .pst file to correspond
to the new profile, but I get the same error message.

How can I recover this file?

Do a file search on your PC for scanpst.exe. Double-click it and follow the
instructions. It is a repair tool for the PST file. You may have to run it
several times. Make sure you leave Outlook closed while you're scanning the
PST for errors.

Kathleen,
I am having the same trouble and knew to try scan.pst on it. However, on
mine even scan.pst says "not a personal folders file". Am I completely out
of luck on this one?

Thanks,
Elf

If scanpst says that, then no tool from Microsoft can fix it. There are
commercial applications that may help more. Google for "PST recovery".
