Hi All,

I'm having a problem opening a exe file which is a program on our network. I have placed the shortcut for this application on the desktop, when I launch the program I get a 'File Download' Dialog box appearing and asking me would I like to open or save the file to my computer. The 'always ask before opening this type of file' check box is greyed out. If log in as the admin I have no problems lauching this application. This application is working fine for all other users on W2k, its not working on the few XP boxes.

Thanks for your time and advice

Some programs work well by doing this, others don't. Some server/client
programs need files to be installed on the workstation, others don't.
Are you sure you have linked to the correct executable? Since you
didn't give us any other details about the mystery program, I can't
give you more specific advice except to call the program's tech support
and have them walk you through the correct way to use their program
from a workstation.

Malke,

The correct executable is being linked, I cant see where the problem is as its just a shortcut. Works fine on w2k clients. The program is called Nearest. Thanks for your time.

Well, just because something works well on one operating system doesn't
mean it will work well on different one. How are you making the
shortcut? If you have a mapped drive to the server and you're browsing
to the executable, right-clicking and dragging to your workstation's
desktop and choosing "Create Shortcut here" and it isn't working, try
right-clicking on your local desktop and choosing New>Shortcut and
browsing to the executable that way. I know it sounds insane, but I
have a client with some DOS programs on a server where you can only
make the shortcut one of those ways and it doesn't work the other way.

Since this may be a question of permissions, make sure your user is on
the server if you are using a domain with Active Directory. Obviously
you've got some permissions set wrong. Probably the easiest way to deal
with this would be to contact the Nearest tech support people. This may
be a known issue.
